2020 has been tough. Through a global health pandemic, devastating wildfires, racial injustice and multiple impacts from intersecting crises, we have grieved and we have had to regroup.
But 2020 has shown us that when we stand together, we are powerful.
The world is waking up to the fact that we cannot continue business as usual. As we look back on the year, we are inspired by the many instances where people around the world came together to ignite change.
We are deeply grateful to all our partners, allies and supporters. The moments of unity we have seen this year are because of incredible efforts of people around the world.

Canada
We stopped the largest tar sands mine in Canada history. Teck Frontier shelved the Teck Frontier Mine because of pressure from people across the country demanding climate action. This never would have happened without a cross-country, Indigenous-led, people powered movement. Read more.
South Africa
The Thabametsi coal-fired power plant that was to be developed in Lephalale, Limpopo was cancelled. 350 Africa campaigned for public finance institutions to stop funding fossil fuels and Thabametsi was officially withdrawn by its sponsors; Marubeni and KEPCO. Read more.
Brazil
Coal from Guaíba, Latin America’s largest open pit mine, was kept in the ground. A federal judge maintained the suspension of the prior licensing process for the Guaíba mine for not considering the impact on Indigenous people and disrespecting the OIT 169 Convention. Read more.
United States
After 8 years of campaigning by 350 and the DivestNY coalition, the New York State Comptroller announced a comprehensive climate action and divestment plan. New York State’s pension fund is the biggest in the world to take this type of comprehensive climate action including divestment. Ever. Read more.
Japan
Massive online protests from different parts of the world forced Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), the world’s third-biggest lender to coal plant developer, to withdraw from the Green Climate Fund (GCF)- a fund mandated by the UN climate convention to support developing countries in addressing climate change impacts. New Zealand
In July we won our multi-year campaign calling for Kiwibank to cut its ties with coal, oil, and gas companies.This makes them the first bank in New Zealand to commit to being Fossil Free, and the first bank in the world that has committed to withhold banking services from coal, oil and gas companies – they won’t even take fossil fuel companies on as customers! Pacific
COVID-19 is the biggest challenge we all faced and are still facing this year. Dealing with the double impacts of the pandemic and the climate crisis really tested our resilience and our capacity to be innovative and creative in the face of these challenges. As we all turned to online platforms we had to find a way to continue to do the deep and transformative organising that is central to who we are as the Pacific. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, we completed the first ever Pacific Pawa Up Fellowship, the first ever organising fellowship of its kind in the Pacific. One of our graduates now sits in the youth advisory group to the United Nation Secretary General on Climate Change and our team in Aotearoa went on to lead a an election campaign that resulted in seeing the largest Pacific Island voter turn out in the history of Aotearoa.
