This programme is being run by two organisations working together: Green New Deal Rising and 350.org. Green New Deal Rising is a movement of young people in the UK campaigning to win a Green New Deal. 350.org is an international organisation focused on supporting movements for climate justice.

These two organisations are providing the funding and staff running the programme.

The Green New Deal is a ten year, game-changing plan to stop climate change and build a world in which we can thrive.

We’re living through a time of crisis. All around us, climate breakdown is unfolding and its effects can’t be ignored any longer. At the same time, the Coronavirus pandemic has destroyed the lives and livelihoods of millions, and laid bare the shocking scale of inequality and poverty in our society.

The Green New Deal is a plan for our government that will:

• • Decarbonise fast and build an economy based on 100% clean energy
  • Create jobs and guarantee everyone a decent livelihood
  • Transform the economy to work for people and planet over profit
  • Protect and restore the environment
  • Promote global justice and end exploitation

During the programme you will:

• • Take part in two weekend long residential trainings with the whole cohort where you’ll learn new skills, find out about Green New Deal Rising and get to know everyone
  • Work with the other participants from your area to test out your skills and build the movement for a Green New Deal
  • Get opportunities to take action by doing things like joining marches and challenging politicians
  • Get one-on-one support from experienced campaigners to build your skills and confidence

We’ve chosen these places to focus on for two main reasons:

• • They are places that we believe will play an important role in the plan to win a Green New Deal – for example, they are places where in the next General Election we expect there to be a close battle between candidates that do and don’t support a GND
  • They are places that haven’t often had many opportunities for young people to receive training and access to programmes like this one

This is an annual programme so we aim to choose different places to focus on each year.

To win the massive changes we want to see in society, we need everyone. But right now in our society some people’s voices are heard louder than others, and that needs to change. That’s why the Leadership Programme is specifically designed to boost the skills and leadership of young people who have been marginalised and underrepresented.

If you don’t fit the criteria but you’re interested to get involved with Green New Deal Rising, join a Welcome Call to find your place in the movement.

If you live near to one of the listed places and travel there regularly e.g. for work, studies or because it’s your nearest town, you should still apply.
If you aren’t anywhere near one of the listed places but still want to be part of the programme, you can make a group application. If you can find 2-4 other people in your area who want to do the programme with you, you can submit a group application no matter where you’re based.

Absolutely! There are no requirements to have any specific kinds of experience to be part of the programme. As long as you have passion and energy, that’s all we’re looking for.

Over the course of six months the main time commitment will be to attend two weekend long training sessions with the whole cohort from across the UK. The first will be in June and the second will take place in September, we plan for both to take place in person.

Between these training weekends, there will be a few smaller activities and meetings happening regularly – this might look like roughly one evening a month and will be arranged flexibly to fit around everyone’s schedules.

There will also be loads of opportunities to take part in actions and activities in your area and across the UK. The main big plan is a protest which is being planned to happen at the end of August which all Leadership participants will be involved in organising and invited to attend.

You don’t need any special equipment or technology to be part of the programme and it is free and fully-funded. The only things you might need are:

• A smartphone
• An internet connection
• If you don’t have access to these things, we can support you to get them – please apply anyway and we will make sure this isn’t a barrier.

Green New Deal Rising is a movement of young people aged 16-35 fighting for a Green New Deal but we have narrowed the age range for this programme specifically based on our experience of running the programme before and who got the most out of participating.

If you fall just outside this age bracket but you’re really keen to take part, it is flexible. Email [email protected] and we can talk about whether you’re still a good fit for the programme.

Yes! This is a fully funded programme, no-one is expected to pay to participate.

We also have money available for all and any participants to cover anything you need to be able to participate. This includes:

• • Travel costs to any in-person events or meetings (e.g. train tickets or petrol costs)
  • Food and drink at any in-person events or meetings (including during your travel)
  • Childcare costs during meetings and events (including either covering costs of paid childcare, or funding an existing carer)
  • Phone credit, data and/or wifi packages to use for online meetings
  • Software for digital accessibility (e.g. screen reader software)

All of these expenses can either be refunded to you after you have paid and shown a receipt, or paid for up front by us (e.g. we buy a train ticket and send it to you) – whichever is easiest.

The sorts of things we can help with include (but aren’t limited to):

• Ensuring all in-person events and meetings are accessible (e.g. ensuring they are wheelchair accessible, have hearing loops installed, rest breaks are encouraged etc)
• Providing funding for any extra equipment or support you might need to participate (e.g. buying screen readers, paying for a carer or support worker)
• Ensuring any resources are created in formats that work for you (e.g. large print, audio-recorded, captioning etc)
• Making sure our spaces and activities are accessible to those with sensory and processing needs
