350.org on Trump’s CPAC comments on coal jobs

Washington, DC — Today, Donald Trump spoke at the 2017 Conservative Political Action Conference, saying, “We’re going to put our miners back to work” with “beautiful, clean coal.” The comments come amid speculation that Trump will sign an executive order repealing a moratorium on new leases for coal mining on federal lands, among other climate and environmental protection rollbacks at the expense of communities’ rights to clean air and water.

350.org Executive Director May Boeve gave the following response:

“Instead of investing in the future, Trump is digging into the past. Lifting the coal moratorium won’t jumpstart the coal industry, it will just fuel one last sputter while the rest of the world moves towards renewables. The climate movement will continue to focus on stopping new fossil fuel infrastructure so this dirty coal never makes it to market. People across the country care deeply about our climate’s future and are ready to fight to keep these fossil fuels in the ground.”

This comes as communities across the country and around the world are mobilizing for the People’s Climate March in Washington, DC on April 29. Trump’s greed and corruption has newly activated tens of thousands of people. In resistance to Trump, people fighting for climate, jobs and justice will mobilize in Washington, DC to fight for the brighter future we know is possible.
