350.org on Judge’s Dismissal of California Climate Lawsuits: “These climate lawsuits are just heating up, and this decision will do little to cool them down.”

Washington, DC — On June 25, U.S. District Judge William Alsup dismissed lawsuits brought by the cities of San Francisco and Oakland, California that sought to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for the costs of damages from climate change.

In response, Jamie Henn, 350.org Strategic Communications Director, offered the following statement:

There’s no doubt in our minds that the fossil fuel industry is largely responsible for the climate crisis and should be held liable for the costs. When Judge Alsup says politicians should take action, he fails to recognize that Congress and the White House are now fully owned subsidiaries of Big Oil, Gas and Coal. These companies have spent decades lobbying against real climate action and must be held responsible.

As the full extent of the fossil fuel industry’s history of deceit and denial comes to light, we expect other courts to rule in the opposite direction. These climate lawsuits are just heating up, and this decision will do little to cool them down.
