USA — In response to the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial for the unjust murder of George Floyd, Teri Brezner, 350.org US Managing Director, said:
“Accountability for Derek Chauvin murdering George Floyd is just a small step towards any semblance of justice. We are in solidarity with Black communities grieving and honoring George Floyd’s life, and are united in our collective demands to defund the police, dismantle the carceral system, and secure transformative investment in communities.
“Our fight for climate justice necessarily includes challenging and dismantling systems of white supremacy that destroy Black Lives. There is no just recovery from the climate crisis without addressing systemic extraction and harm towards Black communities. Our struggle continues.”
350.org acknowledges the murder of Ma’Khia Bryant by police in Ohio, Columbus on the very same day that Chauvin was convicted for the murder of George Floyd. We recognize that one conviction is not justice when a whole police institution consistently perpetuates systemic racism and anti-Black violence again and again. We stand with Movement for Black Lives demands to defund the police.
