Justin Trudeau Needs to Stand Up to Climate Deniers, Not With Them

In response to Justin Trudeau’s statement on the election of Donald Trump, Cameron Fenton, Canadian Strategy and Communications Manager with 350.org issued this response.

Trump’s election is a disaster. Trudeau has to acknowledge the new President, but he shouldn’t be talking about “shared values” with Trump. During the election campaign, Trump encouraged violence against migrants, espoused racism, misogyny and Islamophobia, and denied the very existence of climate change. This is not a leader that shares the values of the Canada that I want to live in.

With a climate denier as the US President-Elect, Justin Trudeau needs to take bolder climate action than ever before, and if Trudeau approves a pipeline to ship tar sands to the United States, be it Kinder Morgan or Keystone XL, he’ll be complicit in Trump’s climate denial. Justin Trudeau needs to stand up to climate deniers, not with them.”
